‘Vellam valiyum Ottalum’ is a provincial method of fishing. Suspending the tender coconut leaves on a big rope, two men pull the two ends of the ropes in a semicircular shape through the water. They will be followed by two or three men with the ‘Ottal’. This is a provincial technique for fishing. This is a round cage made up of bamboo or cane. The base of the cage will be wider than the top. Top will be shorter. If this cage is stabbed in shallow rivers and canals, fishes can be caught. When the coconut leaves are pulled through water, the feared fishes will scatter and will be trapped in the ottal.
